Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Low Cost Infertility Treatment with Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination is a relatively painless and affordable medical procedure for treating specific fertility issues. It is one of the proven treatments our Veda fertility experts rely on to assist many hopeful parents in conceiving a child.

What is Intrauterine Insemination(IUI)?

Intrauterine insemination, also called artificial insemination, is often the first fertility protocol for couples struggling to get pregnant. During the procedure, millions of washed sperms are directly deposited into a women’s uterus around the time of ovulation. The goal is to maximize the number of sperms reaching the eggs in the fallopian tubes, increasing fertilization.

There are three ways IUI improves the chances of conception :

·       Reduces the time it takes for sperm to reach eggs

·       Increases the number of sperms in the female reproductive system

·       Synchronizes the meeting time of sperm with the egg.

Who needs IUI?

Depending on the unique infertility diagnosis during your initial consultation, IUI  can be coordinated with your regular menstrual cycle or with fertility medications to improve your pregnancy rate. In fact, when combined with fertility medicines, IUI doubles the chances of conceiving.

The treatment  is often prescribed  for couples facing  any of the following conditions:

  • Unexplained fertility
  • Hostile cervical conditions( such as endometriosis)
  • Cervical scarring
  • Ovulation disorders
  • Impaired semen quality
  • Sexual dysfunction(erectile problems)
  • Decreased sperm motility

Additionally, single women may also choose to do an IUI  using donor sperm to build their families.

But then,  keep in mind that IUI is not an effective option in couples who have blocked fallopian tubes,   moderate to severe endometriosis,  or severe male infertility.   In such cases, IVF is the best-suggested treatment for better results.

How does it Work?

The actual insemination process takes only a few minutes, like a Pap smear, though the complete process begins with a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle and includes the following steps:

  • Ovarian stimulation – In most instances, the woman would be given medications to induce the development of egg-containing follicles and prepare her uterine lining.
  • Monitoring of ovulation – The fertility specialist will use ultrasound and blood tests as required to monitor follicle development and decide the best timing for insemination.
  • Ovulation induction – When follicles have reached the desired size, the woman receives an hCG hormone injection to trigger ovulation.
  • Sperm preparation  – After an andrology workup, your partner’s or donor’s sperm is processed in our IVF lab for “sperm washing.” This entails separating healthy, motile sperms from non-motile sperms, as well as other seminal cells and fluid to improve the sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg.
  • Insemination – Finally, the sperm sample is placed into the uterus using a flexible catheter inserted through the cervix.

Success rate of IUI

Different couples have different responses with IUI based on their age, the underlying medical conditions, and the duration of the fertility problems. In most cases, especially for women under 35,  IUI treatment has a 10-20% success rate. Even in patients with certain pre-existing conditions, the protocol yields 8-16%.

Moreover, your likelihood of a successful pregnancy increases exponentially with many attempts. For example, you have about 30-60% chances of conception after 3 rounds of IUI.
