Ovulation Induction (OI)

Increase your Fertility with ovulation induction (OI)

Ovulation induction is a basic fertility treatment where you take certain drugs (usually hormones) to stimulate the growth and release of one or more eggs from the ovaries.

In simple cases, this treatment is sufficient to conceive a healthy baby when accompanied by recommended timed sexual intercourse (TSI). However, in many patients, this therapy is combined with other therapies like intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) to increase the opportunity of pregnancy.

If you are struggling with your fertility despite trying to conceive naturally, do not hesitate to contact our team. Our fertility experts have performed this treatment countless times and would be happy to consider it your potential option.

When is it needed?

Every month, a woman’s ovaries release eggs in a process known as ovulation, which leads to a healthy baby after unprotected intercourse. But in 25% of couples with infertility, women have problems with ovulation. This means that she does not ovulate spontaneously, or ovulation occurs at irregular intervals that minimizes the chance of the sperm fertilizing their eggs for natural conception.

How does it work?

Based on your initial fertility diagnosis, your Veda fertility doctor will recommend a program to begin taking the medications, with dosages tailored to your specific needs. They will go over all of these steps with you during treatment so you know what to expect.

Your typical treatment cycle starts with :

  1. A pelvic ultrasound, which your doctor will perform on the third day of your menstrual cycle to understand the natural anatomy of your uterus and fallopian tubes.
  2.  Your doctor will also prescribe clomiphene citrate (Clomid) and gonadotropins as tablets or injections between the third and seventh days or between the fifth and ninth days of your cycle.
  3.  During your fertility treatment, a repeat pelvic ultrasound will be performed to check the development of your follicles and eggs. You may also be asked to have a blood test to measure your hormone levels.
  4. According to the above tests’ results, your doctor will increase or decrease the gonadotropin dose and will let you know when to start trying to conceive naturally or have intrauterine insemination.

Who is it recommended for?

Ovulation induction is usually recommended to those women who

  • Have unexplained infertility issues.
  •  Have irregular or infrequent menstrual cycles, as in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  •  Do not ovulate spontaneously

Success rates of OI

For most healthy couples, the general success rate of ovulation induction is about 18-20% per cycle. However, your chances of success depend on your age, general health, and other fertility concerns you may be facing. Yet, suppose ovulation is not your main problem. In that case, ovulation induction is a highly effective treatment that can help you reach your goal in just a few cycles.
